CARRIAGE HORSES
By David Seifman – NY Post – February 18, 2006 Hansom cabs shouldn't be banned from the streets around Central Park, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday. The mayor — who had earlier rejected calls to ban the horse-drawn carts entirely — said he also opposed plans to restrict them to the park. "Hansom cabs are a part of New York, and I don't think that's a great idea, personally. If you look at them, most of them are on the streets that adjoin Central Park and then they go into the park," the mayor said on his weekly radio show. Animal-rights activists are demanding the city crack the whip on the 68-cab industry following an incident last month where a spooked horse galloped six blocks and collided with a car, breaking its leg and having to be put down.
