HORSE BOLTS & INJURES 3 IN MIDTOWN

by Carrie Melago NY Daily News - 1/3/06

A spooked horse bolted on a midtown street last night, ejecting the driver of the carriage it was pulling, then galloping straight into a station wagon, police and witnesses said. The horse, whose carriage had no passengers, smashed into the car at 50th St. and Ninth Ave. about 9:30 p.m., Fire Department Chief Jim Hodgens said. "The driver of the horse and buggy was ejected from the carriage," a fire official said. Witnesses described a frightening scene. "It was horrifying," said Robyn Hussa, who saw the horse racing through traffic. "It was like a nightmare." The carriage driver was in critical condition at St. Vincent's Midtown Hospital, and two men in the station wagon were also seriously injured, officials said. The horse was pinned under the car and may have suffered a broken leg. Sources said it might have to be euthanized. The NYPD accident investigation unit closed part of Ninth Ave. to investigate the crash. It was not clear what caused the horse to bolt.
