CARRIAGE HORSES
AM-NY May 23, 2006 Re: the injury to the horse Barbaro: Around 800 racehorses die each year from fatal injuries suffered on U.S. racetracks. Thousands sustain injuries so bad that they cannot finish their races. Due to selective genetic pairing and breeding, many racehorses are born with fragile bodies to begin with. Recently, in New York City, carriage horses have been involved in at least three accidents resulting in injury to several people and, in one case, the death of the horse. How many more incidents will it take until people acknowledge that these animals are being abused, whether it's a million- dollar racehorse who may be one of the few to lead a decent life off the track, or one of the thousands of discarded ones sent to slaughter each year? --Teresa D'Amico, Manhattan Return to Letters
