CARRIAGE HORSES
Toronto Star Feb. 25. 2006 My heart goes out to the officers of the Toronto Police Service mounted unit for the loss of one of their lovely horses. The incident reminds me of the Jan. 2, 2006, accident involving a carriage horse in Manhattan. That horse also had to be euthanized. I believe these cases illustrate why modern cities have to reassess their use of horses. This is 2006 and times have changed. However effective the use of horses may be in a few specific instances for police work and in tourist services, these purposes are accomplished at the animals' expense. Modern traffic and working horses don't mix and the animals pay the price. Let's phase out the use of horses in our 21st-century cities. Deborah Chalmers, Toronto Return to Letters
