CARRIAGE HORSES

A HORSE’S FATE

Published in AM-NYC, Letters to the Editor, January 11 2006:

In response to letter writer Anne Murphy and others who are concerned that “retiring” the carriage horses might mean these poor animals would end up homeless or euthanized, the truth of the matter is that this is the fate awaiting most of them after a short , hard life in the industry. For these horses, life on New York City streets is merciless and tough. And while the average police horse is retired to pasture after 14 years, the poor carriage horse is sent to auction and the “glue factory” after only about four years. Because of over breeding, few are ever adopted and most are sold for slaughter for cat and dog food and the European meat markers.

A grim “retirement for these gentle giants.
