PREGNANT HORSE AMONG ANIMALS RESCUED FROM 1-44 CRASH
Sullivan (KMOV) -St. Louis, Missouri

Doctors say the more than two-dozen horses rescued from a crash on Interstate 44 yesterday day face a long, uphill battle in their recovery.

The horses that were injured are now being treated at area veterinary hospitals for head trauma, cuts and even partial paralysis.

The Humane Society says the public may be asked to pitch in to help raises funds to buy the horses from their owner to keep them from eventually being slaughtered.

The Humane Society, whose volunteers played a critical role in rescuing the panicked horses when the double tractor-trailer they were riding in crashed, is still negotiating to get custody of the horses so they can adopt them out.

There is still some confusion about who the actual owner was. He was reportedly expecting to get $300 to $500 per horse from an Illinois processing plant where the animals were heading to be slaughtered.

Humane Society officials say a horse trailer rescue is a horseperson's biggest nightmare.

“We just had a whole lot of volunteers and employees who were willing to get in there and get the job done there wasn't a whole lot of question about what to do,” says Earlene Cole with the Humane Society.

People may assume that these were older animals at the end of their days. And while it's true there was a29-year-old former racehorse on board. There were also horses that were one and two years old, another one was pregnant.
