THE ISSUE: The closing of Shamrock Stables and the future of NY's horse-drawn carriage industry.

NY Post - November 4, 2009
***
Shamrock Stables is closing, and with it the abuse of 32 magnificent horses may end ("There Goes the 'Neigh'-borhood'," Nov. 1).

I hope the same comes true for the other four stables and that this is the first step toward eliminating the arcane and inhumane horse-drawn-carriage trade from the Big Apple.

Finally, the city has come to its senses and is shutting down a carriage-horse stable that pays below-market rent in a municipally owned building.

This business is cash-only, pays no concession fees, leaves "gifts" of manure for the city to clean up (and me to step in), requires oversight by two city agencies and brashly overcharges tourists.
