LOHV
would like to thank NYC Council Member Tony Avella for introducing
these noble bills to ban Carriage Horses in NYC.
LOHV
also thanks Elizabeth Forel, the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn
Carriages, and the many other groups and individuals who’ve supported
the proposed ban for so long.
No one is against labor by those willing and able to work; but we are against slave labor in the year 2009.
Would
the teamsters support those who would exploit children? If not,
then they certainly should not come to the support of those who would
exploit animals forced to work in extreme temperatures and at great
risk to their health and lives.
Surely the 40
people who now exploit the labor of horses can find another form of
livelihood that would be more lucrative, and we know that help along
those lines has been offered.
We urge the Council members to vote for this ban for the sake of the horses and your constituency who support office holders who support humane legislation.
